Women's Soccer Plays To Draw With Cincinnati

OXFORD, Ohio - Junior Jessica Godshall (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) scored her first collegiate goal as Miami University's women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Cincinnati, Sunday (Sept. 7) afternoon at Miami Soccer Field.

"I'm really proud of our kids," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "We played a great game and I'm absolutely convinced this is a good (Miami) team."

The RedHawks came out furious, but the Bearcats were able to strike first. Lauren Buland took a Jennifer Sibert pass on a breakaway and pushed it past sophomore goalkeeper Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) in the 22nd minute to give UC a 1-0 lead.

Godshall scored an equalizing goal four minutes later when she gathered a loose ball and blasted a shot from beyond the 18-yard box past Cincinnati starting goalkeeper Sherry Slye. It was Miami's second goal of the season and first goal in almost 160 minutes.

With new energy after Godshall's goal, Miami was able to generate scoring opportunities, including a breakaway that set up the RedHawks' second goal. In the 45th minute, junior Kristy Tamaska (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) sent a long pass ahead to junior Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) who was able to get a breakaway on Slye. After going around the freshman keeper, Swinehart sent the ball in front of the goal, where it deflected off a Bearcat defender for an own goal.

Miami controlled play well into the second half, limiting Cincinnati to just four shots after the first intermission. UC's first shot in the second half came on a Tasha Wagner penalty kick in the 70th minute. Terry was called for a foul while trying to contain an errant clearing kick inside the box, leading to the PK. Wagner was able to put the ball past Terry to knot the score at 2-2.

Both teams were unable to unable to score through the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, and the game ended in a draw. For the game, Miami outshot Cincinnati, 17-11, while UC scored the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3. Terry collected five saves, while Slye had three in 45 minutes of action and Tracy Hale tallied a pair of saves in 65 minutes.

The RedHawks return to action when they travel to Dayton to take on Wright State on Friday, Sept. 12. Miami will return home on Sunday to open their MAC season against Ball State. Kickoff between the RedHawks and Raiders is set for 5 p.m., while the Miami/BSU game gets underway at 1 p.m.
