OXFORD, Ohio - For the second consecutive year the white team left the ice with a 3-1 victory in Miami hockey's annual Red-White scrimmage on Sunday afternoon. Senior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) netted the game-winner for the white team, and also chipped in with an assist on the first goal for two points.
Hogeboom's teammate on the white squad, senior Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario), opened up the scoring in the first period with a goal at 4:00. The game-winner came off Hogeboom's stick 8:20 later, on an unassisted strike.
Sophomore Taylor Hustead (Scottsdale, Ariz.) narrowed the gap for the Red team, 2-1, with a goal of his own at 14:00 in the first period. Assisting on Hustead's goal was senior Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.).
Scoring the final goal of the scrimmage, which was only two periods with a 20-minute running clock, was sophomore Chris Michael (Glenview, Ill.). Michael netted the empty-net goal with only 58 seconds on the clock after receiving a pass from freshman Joe Cooper (Toronto, Ontario).
The Miami hockey team has one full week now of practice before its first game, Oct. 3, at the Lefty McFadden Invitational against St. Lawrence. The puck is set to drop at 8:05 p.m. on Friday night, as the game is not only on the radio, but also is being broadcast on national television by CSTV. Make sure to check with your local cable provider about the broadcast.
