Miami Soccer Falls At Central Michigan

Box Score

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Megan Ortner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) made four saves and Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a goal, and hit the post for a potential equalizer, as Miami University's women's soccer team fell to Central Michigan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant.

In the rain, Miami had trouble generating offense, as the RedHawks tied CMU with a season-low nine shots. The Red and White was, however, able to pressure the Chippewa defense, edging the home team in corner kicks, 7-2.

"We did a poor job finishing our (scoring) chances today," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "We made some mental mistakes and both for them both offensively and defensively."

Central Michigan scored the game-winner in the 59th minute when Stacy Downing sent a cross into the box from the left side. Jacquie Lacek accepted the pass and snuck it past Ortner for the game's 2-1 final.

The RedHawks had an opportunity to equalize in the final two minutes. Vistica took a Jessica Godshall (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) corner kick and headed a shot at the goal. Her attempt hit the right post and was cleared away by a CMU player.

Vistica put Miami on the board with her second goal of the season in the fourth minute. After collecting the ball, Vistica was able to split a pair of defenders on the right side. Her shot went par post, past Chippewa keeper Anne Decker.

The Chippewas responded in the 31st minute, courtesy of Rachel Snyder. Snyder tied the match at 1-1 when she sent a bounding ball past Miami's freshman keeper.

Ortner made four second-half saves on the day, while Decker made five of her own for CMU.

"Megan played great for us today," said Kramig. "She is really developing into a first-class goalkeeper, and kept us in this match."

The RedHawks will return home for a pair of league matches this weekend. Toledo will travel to Oxford on Friday, Oct. 3, while Miami will play host to Bowling Green on Sunday, Oct. 5. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
