Miami Soccer Drops Close MAC Opener

Sept. 14, 2003

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Amy Holst scored a goal in the 72nd minute and Megan Swafford made eight saves as Ball State defeated Miami University's women's soccer team, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Miami Soccer Field. The game opened MAC play for both schools.

After an even, scoreless first half, the RedHawks (1-3-1, 0-1-0 MAC) dominated the attack in the second half, outshooting the Cardinals (3-2-1, 1-0-0 MAC), 15-1, in the frame. Ball State's lone second-half shot proved to be all that was necessary as it stood as the game-winner.

In the 72nd minute, BSU served the ball into the box on a free kick setting their scoring play in motion. After two balls had been cleared off the goal line by Miami defenders, Holst was able to get a foot on the ball and find the back of the net. The attack was the Cardinal's only real offensive showing of the second half.

Eighty seconds later, the RedHawks generated their best chance at knotting the score, drawing a penalty kick. Freshman Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) drew coverage and was taken down in the box to set up the PK. Senior Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) took the kick, but was unable to convert as Swafford guessed right, and making the save as she fell to her left.

For the match, the RedHawks held the shot advantage, 22-4, but were also called for more fouls (15-6). The Cardinals had the edge in corner kicks, 6-4, with all six coming in the first half.

Sophomore Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made one save in the loss.

Miami continues league play with a pair of home matches next weekend. On Friday, Sept. 19, the RedHawks host Western Michigan, before welcoming Northern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoffs are set for 5 and 1 p.m., respectively.
