Sept. 14, 2003

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Despite getting its third goal of the weekend from senior Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Christopher's), the Miami University field hockey team (1-3) failed to generate enough offense on Sunday afternoon in a 3-1 loss to Davidson College (2-4). The Wildcats scored two unanswered goals over the final 67:57 to leave Ohio with two wins after defeating Saint Louis, 1-0, on Saturday.

Davidson wasted little time in scoring its first goal when junior Liz Schoening netted her first goal of the season only 54 seconds into the contest. Schoening took one dribble into the middle of the circle and rifled a shot past the Miami goalie to give her team a 1-0 advantage.

The RedHawks returned the favor a little over a minute later, at 2:03, when Snedden notched her third goal in the last two games. On its first penalty corner of the contest, Snedden evened the game, 1-1, for the Red and White with a nifty dribble move that resulted in an easy shot through the five-hole of Davidson's goalie.

Schoening scored her second goal of the game at 22:00 in the first stanza to give Davidson a 2-1 lead. Junior Tiffany Homan crossed the ball in front of the goal to Schoening, who easily slam dunked the ball into the goal.

The game remained in favor of the Wildcats, 2-1, until late in the second half when junior Courtney Hughes successfully converted a penalty stroke at 57:35. Hughes' penalty stroke was the result of a fantastic defensive save by Miami junior Katie Moran (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall). The defensive save is Moran's fourth of the season.

Freshman goalie Kerri Matthews (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) kept the RedHawks in the contest with a career-best 14-save outing. Collecting the win for Davidson was junior Sarah Nolan with three saves.

Miami was outshot in the contest, 17-5, and out cornered, 5-4.

The RedHawks play next at Appalachian State on Monday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. The next day, Sept. 23, they suit up against the No. 2 team in the country, playing a 4 p.m. game at North Carolina.
