Box Score
Just as Miami softball has not gotten the breaks with nice weather, neither has its offense as the RedHawks dropped two versus Bowling Green, 2-1 and 3-1, at BGSU Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon. Both sophomore Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) and freshman Courtney Salmon (Auburn, Wash./Auburn) pitched strong games for Miami, but the RedHawks were unable to get the breaks during both mid-week games.
Miami got on the board first as junior Jessica Zogaib (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) reached first on a throwing error by the Falcon shortstop to lead off the fourth inning. After a strikeout and a stolen base by Zogaib, freshman Becca Garcia (Martinez, Calif./College Park) advanced Zogaib to third on an infield single. Poggendorf gave Miami the lead with another infield single to score Zogaib and give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green answered with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Lindsay Heimrich led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when an attempted pick off by Garcia went into right field. Jenifer Kernahan singled to left to score Heimrich and even the score at one.
The Falcons added another in the fifth inning when Stephanie Finkel led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After advancing to third on a sacrifice, Kandice Machain doubled with two outs to give Bowling Green a 2-1 advantage and the eventual victory.
The RedHawks left five runners in scoring position and seven runners on base during the first game of the double header. Poggendorf only gave up one earned run and struck out three while giving up five hits in the losing effort.
In the second game, Gina Rango singled to lead off the second inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice and then scored on a Crystal Wilson single to give Bowling Green an early 1-0 lead.
Miami answered in the top of the third with a two-out run to tie the score at 1-1. Junior Jacque Molinaro (Folansbee, W.Va./Brooke) walked to lead the inning, advanced to second on a Jamie Carey (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) bunt and then scored on a single to right field by Zogaib.
Bowling Green took back the lead in the fourth inning with back-to-back-to-back singles by Libby Voshell, Rango, and Kernahan to score two runs, one being on a passed ball and take a 3-1 lead.
Miami hit the ball hard throughout the game, but were unable to find the open spaces and get the clutch hit. The RedHawks left six runners on base in the second game. Salmon struck out five and gave up two earned runs with five hits during the second game.
Miami will travel to Akron to face the Zips in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
