Senior Dave Bergan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) earned his first career Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week honor, after he helped Miami overcome its conference rival, Ohio University, the MAC office announced on Monday.
The 2002-03 team captain led the RedHawks in the year-long "Battle of the Bricks" contest versus Ohio on Friday. The Red and White earned their first MAC victory of the season over the Bobcats, 146-89.
In his final meet in Oxford, Bergan started the evening by swimming the last leg of the 400-yard medley relay for Miami's first top-finish. Bergan won his second race of the night by touching the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle. In Bergan's last race, he won the 100-yard freestyle to give him three victories on the evening, and thus help Miami to a thrilling victory over Ohio.
Bergan is the fifth RedHawk swimmer or diver and third mens swimmer or diver, to earn the top swimming honor in the conference. Sophomore diver Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) earned MAC Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 14 with senior Kelly Ball (Granger, IN/Penn) taking home the next week's honor on Jan. 21. Miami's women's swimming and diving team won two straight awards earlier in the year when juniors Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, OH/St. Ursula) and Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) raked in the awards on Nov. 20 and 26, respectively.
