OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) each won two events to lead Miami University's women's swimming & diving team captured the 10th Annual Miami Invitational Championship. The final day of the meet began with Miranda topping the field in the 1650 freestyle, Sunday evening at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the Miami campus.
The Red and White led for the majority of the event, taking the lead following the first evening of events. Eberst took first place in the one-meter diving, while six other RedHawks figured in the scoring, to put the RedHawks ahead of No. 13 Indiana. On day two, Saturday, Eberst and senior Heidi Willemssen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) finished one and two, respectively, from the three-meter board.
Day one also saw sophomores Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) take second in the 200 individual medley, ahead of sophomore Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) in fifth. The RedHawks also placed teams in third and fifth places in the 200 freestyle relay.
On day two, Miami put a trio of finisher in the finals of two events, including the 400 individual medley. Sophomores Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Armbruster finished second and fourth, respectively. Miranda took fifth in the 400 IM and led the way in the 200 free, taking fourth.
The RedHawks and Kenyon, winner of 19-of-20 Division III National Championships, finished one and two ahead of Indiana in third place and Emory and MAC-foe Marshall, who rounded out the top five. Johns Hopkins, Lewis, Wheeling Jesuit, Cincinnati and Carnegie Mellon also competed, while Illinois sent a pair of divers to the meet.
Miami last won its own event in 1999, while also taking top honors in 1994.
The RedHawks take the holidays off before heading to Hawaii for winter training. Miami returns stateside for a Jan. 16 home triangular with Kenyon and Cincinnati. Teams hit the pool at 5 p.m.
