OXFORD, Ohio-With day two in the books Miami University's women's swimming & diving team is gunning to capture the Miami Invitational Championship, holding a 462.50 point advantage over No. 13 Indiana. Tomorrow, Dec. 7, is the final day of the meet held at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the Miami University campus.
The diving events once again helped the RedHawk women build their advantage. Sohphomore Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and senior Heidi Willemssen took the top two positions off the three-meter board with scores of 509.60 and 416.75, respectively.
On the swimming side, strong depth propelled Miami, as three RedHawks made finals appearances in both the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle events. In the 400 IM, sophomore Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) took second, while sophomore Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) took fourth and senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) finished fifth. Miranda led the charge in the 200 free, taking fourth.
A solid showing by Armbruster in the 100 butterfly was overshadowed by Marshall's Milla Kuurto. Kuurto, who had set the meet record in the event during the morning's preliminaries, reset the mark, along with the Mid-American Conference record, in taking top honors in the event.
Miranda and Forster also teamed with freshman Ashley Seymour (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and redshirt frosh Maggi Bulla (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursuline) to take second in the 800 freestyle relays.
The third and final day of the Miami Invitational kicks off with preliminaries at 9 a.m. at the Nixon Center. The 1650 freestyle finals and relay events will be run during the morning session. Remainder of finals are schedule for the evening session at 6 p.m.
