Miami University's women's swimming & diving team hits the pool this weekend when it hosts the Miami Invitational at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Ten teams from around the region will ascend on Oxford for the 10th annual event, which begins on Friday, Dec. 5, and goes through Sunday, Dec. 7.
This Week: After having Thanksgiving weekend off, Miami returns to the pool at the Miami Invitational. The RedHawks host the event for the 10th time and welcome 10 teams to the Nixon Aquatic Center, Dec. 5-7.
No. 13 Indiana highlights the list of attending teams, while Kenyon has won 19 of the last 20 Division III National Championships. MAC-foe Marshall and local rival Cincinnati round out the fellow Division I competition, while Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Lewis and Wheeling Jesuit also are scheduled to make the trip to Oxford.
Last Time Out: The RedHawks pushed their dual meet winning streak to five meets with a pair victories in their last weekend of action. On Friday, Nov. 21, Miami upended Wright State, 154-89, in Dayton, before dropping Xavier, 123-77, at home on Saturday, Nov. 22nd.
The Red and White swept the top three spots in four events against the Raiders on Friday, including a pair of wins each by sophomores Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). On Saturday, Miami won eight-straight events in defeating the Musketeers, 123-77.
What Sophomore Jinx?: A trio of sophomores continue their hot starts for the RedHawks. Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) already has racked up seven wins this season, while Christin Eberst has won seven of her last eight diving events. Katie Forster, who set Miami's 1000 freestyle mark as a freshman, has won five events this season, including the 1000 free and 200 butterfly against both Purdue and Wright State.
Picking Up Where She Left Off: Since winning both the 500 and 1650 freestyle events at last year's MAC Championships, senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) has picked up where she left off. Miranda has won all four 500 freestyle events she has entered this season, while also capturing top honors in Miami's first 1650 freestyle of the season. Miranda has picked up a pair of wins in the 1000 freestyle, the 1650's early-season counterpart.
Fab Freshmen: Sarah Baumert (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Ashley Seymour (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) have teamed up to give the RedHawks a freshmen duo to be reckoned with. This season, neither swimmer has finished lower than fourth (once), while racking up a combined six wins and nine second-place finishes on the year in individual events. Baumert won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke against BSU after finishing second in the previous six breaststroke events. Seymour has competed in seven different events, winning three times, including the 100 breaststroke against Purdue. She also has three second- and four third-place finishes to her credit.
We're Going Streaking!: With wins in each of their first three MAC dual meets, the RedHawks have pushed their streak of conference dual-meet wins to 20. Before opening this season, 3-0, Miami went 8-0 in each of the previous two seasons. The last meet of the 2000-01 season pitted the Red and White against Buffalo and Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks fell to EMU, 157-143, but defeated UB to start the streak. On a smaller scale, Miami has won five straight meets this season.
Up Next: Following the Miami Invite, MU takes the holiday season off for training in Hawaii. The RedHawks return to action in 2004 against Cincinnati and Kenyon on Jan. 16 at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
