OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) was named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today. Miranda is the first Miami swimmer to earn the honor this year, while earning it for the first time in her career.
Over the weekend, Miranda won both the 500 and 1650 freestyle events at the Miami Invitational. Her 500-free win helped her remain undefeated in the event this season and also enabled the RedHawks to end day one in first place. Miranda won the 1650 freestyle of day three of the invite. Similar to the 500, she has yet to be beaten in the event.
The Red and White captured its first Miami Invitational championship since 1999 and its third in the 10-year history of the program. Among the teams in the field were No. 13 Indiana, MAC-foe Marshall, and Kenyon, winner of 19 of the last 20 Division III National Championships.
Miranda and the RedHawks have the holidays off to train before returning to action against Cincinnati and Kenyon on Jan. 16 at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Miami has won its last five dual meets, while maintaining a 20-meet MAC winning streak.
