2003-2004 Overall Record: 1-1 * 2003-2004 MAC Record: 1-0This Week: Miami returns from the road where it posted a 1-1 record in the opening weekend of the season. The RedHawks host Ball State on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Cardinals have just one meet under their belts, finishing second out of six teams at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet on Oct. 25. It will mark the first dual meet for BSU, while MU is 1-1 on the season, and 1-0 in MAC meets.
Last Time Out: The RedHawks began the 2003-04 MAC dual meet season on the right foot. At Buffalo, Miami placed athletes in the top two of all 13 events to claim a 135-107 win. Senior Andrew Keefe and freshman Paul Ricard each won two events, and combined with Justin Marcy and John Grubb to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Against Cleveland State, Keefe, Ricard, freshman Griffin Marshall and sophomore Aaron Wuensch each won events for the RedHawks in their season-opener, but came up short. The Vikings edged Miami, 136-107.
Going The Distance: Freshman Paul Ricard (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) has his collegiate career on the right track. After two meets, the rookie distance swimmer has four wins on the season. Ricard has won the 500 free at each of the first two meets of the season, while picking up win's in the 1000 freestyle and 400 free relay against Buffalo.
More Rookie Success: After two meets, another pair of RedHawk freshman have begun to make contributions to the team. Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) won the 100 breaststroke at his first collegiate meet against Cleveland State, while Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield- Ohio) picked up a win as part of the 400 free relay against Buffalo with fellow frosh Paul Ricard, among others.
Preseason Poll: Miami was picked to finish third at this year's MAC Championships according to a preseason poll conducted among MAC coaches. The RedHawks, who finished fourth at last year's meet, were picked behind defending champion Eastern Michigan and Ball State. EMU will be seeking its league-record 23rd MAC crown, while BSU was picked to repeat its second-place finish of a year ago. Buffalo and Ohio rounded out the poll, being picked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Coming Back: Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) highlights a four-member senior class that returns for the RedHawks. Head coach Pete Lindsay will utilize a talented freshman class to replace departed letterwinner Kelly Ball among others. Ball was the MAC's Senior Swimmer of the Year, as well as a first-team all-MAC selection and Miami's Male Athlete of the Year.
New in 2003-2004: The Mid-American Conference was reduced to five teams in men's swimming with Toledo's decision to drop its program. The Rockets took third at last year's MAC Championships. Miami now has five conference dual meets, with its first at Buffalo.
Up Next: Miami has the next two weeks off before facing local rivals Wright State and Xavier. The RedHawks travel to Dayton for a dual meet with WSU on Friday, Nov. 21, before hosting Xavier on Saturday, Nov. 22. Start times for the meets are set at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
