OXFORD, Ohio - Seven unanswered goals were scored at Goggin Ice Arena on Friday night before the visiting team managed to score against freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.), as the Miami (7-6-2, 5-3-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey team cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Nanooks. Six different RedHawk's tallied multiple points in the win as Miami improves its record to 5-2-1 on Friday nights.
Miami jumped out on top early when senior Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) knocked home an errant rebound at 6:18 in the first period for his eighth goal of the season. Edwardson scored after a shot by freshman Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario) ricocheted off the pads of Alaska Fairbanks (5-6-0, 4-3-0 CCHA) goalie Preston McKay. Creating the entire play back in the RedHawks' defensive zone was freshman Marty Guerin (Lansing, Mich.), who chipped the puck out of the zone off the boards to Christie in the neutral zone.
Senior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored in similar fashion to Edwardson at 8:29 to give the Red and White a two-goal advantage, 2-0. This time senior Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario) fed freshman Andy Nelson (Superior, Wis.) in front of the net, and again McKay was there with the first save, but Hogeboom finished off the rebound.
Another Miami senior gave the RedHawks a 3-0 lead in the second period when Kompon found the back of the net for the fifth time this season at 1:16. Skating on the man advantage, Hogeboom and Kompon worked a little give-and-go on a 3-on-2 break to give the Red and White its three-goal load. Also credited with an assist on the goal was senior defenseman Ben Tharp (Hastings, Minn.).
The RedHawks netted four more goals in the third period to run the score up to a 7-0 count. Guerin notched the first of those four goals at 3:21 in the final frame, artfully swatting the puck out of midair on a shot by Edwardson.
Hogeboom lit the lamp for the second time at 7:30 when he scored off a pass from his fellow linemate, Kompon. Also assisting on Hogeboom's goal, Miami's fifth, was Nelson. The goal gave Hogeboom two goals and an assist for the game, lifting him to Perani Cup First Star honor's at the conclusion of the contest.
The Red and White upped its lead to 6-0 when Christie increased his lead as the nation's best goal-scoring freshmen with his tenth goal of the season. Christie cleaned up a rebound in front of the UAF net at 10:42 to give Miami a 6-0 lead, and also up his team-leading tally to five power-play markers. Creating the scoring chance for Christie was sophomore Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.), who launched a bomb from the blueline that was barely saved by the UAF goalie.
Sophomore Taylor Hustead (Scottsdale, Ariz.) put a cap on the Miami scoring spree with his fourth goal of the season at 16:17 to make it a 7-0 contest, only to be ruined 19 seconds later by UAF's Tom Herman. Herman notched UAF's only goal of the game on a turnaround shot in the slot, thus wrecking a shutout bid by goalie Crawford-West.
Despite losing the shutout, Crawford-West finished up his fifth win of the season, stopping 26-of-27 shots (.963). McKay made 26 saves in 43:21 of action, while backup Keith Bartusch stopped 14 shots in relief duty. McKay allowed four goals and Bartusch allowed three Miami goals.
Recording multiple points in the game for Miami were Hogeboom (2-1-3), Kompon (1-2-3), Edwardson (1-2-3), Christie (1-2-3), Nelson (0-3-3) and Guerin (1-1-2). The two teams square off again tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m. to wrap up the weekend tilt.
