Miami University's men's swimming and diving team opens its season this Friday, Oct. 31. The RedHawks travel to Cleveland for a dual meet with Cleveland State, before heading to Buffalo for its first MAC meet of the season on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Cleveland State: Friday's dual meet marks the opening of the season for both Miami and CSU. The Vikings return 15 swimmers from last year's team that finished second at the Horizon League Championships. Cleveland State is led by junior Warren Vickers, who was a league champion in three individual events and a pair of relays last year.
Buffalo: The Bulls were picked to finished fourth in the MAC's Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing sixth at last year's MAC Championships. Junior Aviv Oren returns for UB as the lone all-MAC honoree from last season. Oren was named to the first team after winning the 100 breaststroke and finishing fourth in the 200 backstroke.
Preseason Poll: Miami was picked to finish third at this year's MAC Championships according to a preseason poll conducted among MAC coaches. The RedHawks, who finished fourth at last year's meet, were picked behind defending champion Eastern Michigan and Ball State. EMU will be seeking its league-record 23rd MAC crown, while BSU was picked to repeat its second-place finish of a year ago. Buffalo and Ohio rounded out the poll, being picked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Coming Back: Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) highlights a four-member senior class that returns for the RedHawks. Head coach Pete Lindsay will utilize a talented freshman class to replace departed letterwinners Kelly Ball among others. Ball was the MAC's Senior Swimmer of the Year, as well as a first-team all-MAC selection and Miami's Male Athlete of the Year.
New in 2003-2004: The Mid-American Conference was reduced to five teams in men's swimming with Toledo's decision to drop its program. The Zips took third at last year's MAC Championships. Miami now has five conference dual meets, with its first at Buffalo.
Up Next: The RedHawks continue to dive into their league schedule, returning home to host Ball State on Saturday, Nov. 8. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m.
