HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Freshman Megan Ortner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) did not allow a goal, while Aimee Prevallet (Fairfax Station, Va./Centreville) tallied a pair of assists, in leading Miami University's women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Marshall University Sunday afternoon in Huntington, W.Va.
Junior Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 17th minute. Prevallet sent a long ball down the right side, as Swinehart outran two defenders to retrieve the pass. She took two touches before sending a shot, near post, past Marshall keeper Ashleigh Woods.
The RedHawks (5-8-2, 4-6-1 MAC) dominated possession of the ball throughout the game, edging the Thundering Herd (2-12-1, 2-7-0 MAC) in both shots, 12-9, and corner kicks, 8-1. Any scoring opportunities Marshall had were stifled by Miami's defense.
Ortner saved a pair of shots in registering the shutout, her second of the season. The RedHawk defense played well in front of the freshman goalkeeper, as senior Tricia Gill (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and freshman Abby Whittaker (St. Charles, Mo./Villa Duchesne) each cleared potential Herd goals off the goal line to preserve the shutout.
Marshall also had a goal negated in the early goings of the match by an offsides call.
Junior Jessica Godshall (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute. Prevallet sent a centering pass to Godshall, who scored her second goal of the season on a blast from the top of the 18-yard box.
The loss eliminated the Herd from contention for the MAC Tournament, while Miami's post season hopes remain alive.
The Red and White return home for a non-conference match with Butler on Friday, Oct. 24, before hosting Akron in their MAC finale on Sunday, Oct. 26.
