Box Score

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Even though a shootout decided the eventual winner, the Miami (1-3-1) hockey team and UMass. Lowell (0-1-1) tied, 4-4, in the first game of the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. The River Hawks won the shootout, 4-2, to move on to the classic's championship game while the Red and White await the loser of the game between Alaska-Anchorage and Air Force.

The RedHawks took the first lead of the contest when freshman Marty Guerin (Lansing, Mich.) scored a rebound goal at 10:31 in the first period. Taking the initial shot from the point was senior Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) to earn his seventh point in the last three games. Also credited with an assist on the goal was junior Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.), his fourth helper of the season.

Miami nearly had a 1-0 lead at the end of 20 minutes, but UML's Bobby Robbins knotted the game at 1-1 when he scored a power-play goal with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. A late Miami penalty allowed the River Hawks to go on the man advantage, and Robbins netted the goal when he broke into the RedHawk zone untouched.

Elias Godoy scored UML's next goal at 1:01 in the second period when he caught freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.) out of position to give his team a 2-1 lead. Crawford-West made the initial save on the River Hawks rush but never got back into position as Godoy scored on the open net.

Another goal was scored with just seconds left, this time on a Miami power play, as sophomore Taylor Hustead (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tied the game, 2-2, with one second left on the man advantage at 6:43 in the second frame. Hustead slipped the puck past the UML goalie on the short side after Edwardson cycled the puck to him behind the net. Sophomore Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.) was credited with the second helper on the goal.

UML took its second lead of the game, 3-2, when Ben Walter scored a power-play goal from between the dots at 19:08 in the second period. The RedHawks, only seconds before, had two golden shorthanded opportunities but were thwarted by UML goalie Chris Davidson.

Early in the third period, freshman Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario) one-timed a 2-on-1 pass past Davidson to even the game at three apiece. Feeding Christie with the pass on the rush was senior Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario), moving one point away now from 100 for his career.

At 3:11 in the third period the Red and White took its second lead of the game, since scoring the first goal, on sophomore Chris Michael's (Glenview, Ill.) third power-play goal of the season. Michael was waiting on the doorstep for a pass from Christie, who slipped into open ice on the left wing after getting a pass from Kompon. The assist for Kompon gives him 100 career points (36-64-100), becoming the 33rd player in Miami history to reach the century mark.

UML tied the game, 4-4, when it scored its third power-play goal of the contest at 6:21 in the third stanza. Walter put the puck in the net for the second time in the contest to force the extra period between UML and Miami.

After neither time managed to find the back of the net in overtime, the game finished as a 4-4 tie in the record books, but a shootout was then necessary to decide which team would play in tomorrow's championship game. UML came out on top in the shootout, 4-2, as the RedHawks now face either UAA or Air Force in tomorrow's consolation game, Oct. 18, at 4:05 p.m. (8:05 EDT).
