ATHENS, Ohio - Carolyn Valade scored a golden goal 2:34 into the second overtime as Ohio University handed Miami University's women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in Athens, Ohio, on Friday afternoon.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, with the Bobcats converting their offensive charge into shots. Miami was out shot, 20-13, its largest shot deficit of the season.
In the second overtime, Valade had a breakaway down the right side, when freshman Megan Ortner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) came off her line to defend the shot. The ball cleared Ortner and found the net, far post, as the game reached its 103rd minute.
The freshman keeper came up big in the 17th minute, stopping a pair of Ohio shots back-to-back. Tiffany Horvath got a shot off from the left side that the Cincinnati native was able to save the ball falling to her left. Kendra Hornschmeier came away with the rebound and sent another shot on goal, but Ortner was able to recover and came up with the save.
Ortner made 13 saves for Miami, matching the second-highest single-game total in school history. Her counterpart, Melissa Parra, stopped all six RedHawk shots on goal.
Miami's only first-half opportunity came from Katie Boyd (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington). Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) took the ball down the right side and sent a centering pass to Boyd. Boyd one-timed a shot wide right of the goal.
In the second half, Vistica was able to generate another scoring chance. Jessica Godshall (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) sent a crossing pass into the box, where Vistica headed the ball on goal. Parra was able to punch the shot over the cross bar for a corner kick.
Vistica led the RedHawk offense, taking a game-high five shots, with four going on goal.
The game was marred by 17 Miami fouls, compared to eight Ohio violations, while both of the match's yellow cards went against the Bobcats. In the second period, the RedHawks were called for 12 fouls to OU's one.
The Red and White road trip continues with Marshall on Sunday. The RedHawks and Thundering Herd kick off at 1 p.m. in Huntington, W.Va.
