Miami University's women's swimming team opens its 2003-04 season in Bowling Green, Ohio on Friday. The RedHawks will compete at the Tom Stubbs Relay, hosted by Bowling Green State University. The meet begins at 5 p.m.
Tom Stubbs Relays: The Tom Stubbs Relays, hosted by Bowling Green, is a non-scoring meet comprised solely of swimming relay and team diving events. Last year, Miami won five events at the Stubbs Relays, while taking second place twice.
Last Time Out: The 2003 MAC Championships marked the last time the RedHawks have competed as a team. Miami used four first-place finishes to capture its second-straight conference title.
Senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and junior Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) each won two events to pace the Red and White. Miranda won her third-straight 1650 free championship, while winning the 500 free for the second year in a row. Lamb swept both backstroke events, winning in both the 100 and 200-yard events.
Showing Her Smarts: Over the summer, sophomore diver Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was named to the College Swim Coaches Athletic Association (CSCAA) Academic All-America team. Eberst, who boasts a 3.56 GPA, was an NCAA qualifier as a freshman, competing in both the one- and three-meter diving events at the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala.
Did Someone Say NCAA Qualifier?: Eberst was not the only RedHawk to fly down to Alabama. Amy Miranda joined the rookie diver, reaching the NCAA-qualifying standard in each of her MAC Championship events, the 500 and 1650 free. Miranda also met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard with her time in the 1650 free as a sophomore.
Miami's MAC Experience: Miami has seen unprecedented success in the Mid-American Conference over the last two seasons. The RedHawks have won the last two MAC Championships, while finishing 8-0 in MAC dual meets over that time. Overall, the Red and White have won 17-straight MAC dual meets.
In their history, the RedHawks have won a MAC-record 13 league championships, including the last 12 under Miami Hall of Fame coach Dave Jennings.
Welcome Back: The Red and White feature a strong core of returnees from last year's MAC Championship squad, including both MAC Champions, and four-of-five all-MAC performers. Miranda and Lamb earned all-MAC status after winning a pair of MAC Championships, joining freshman Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) on the first team. Junior Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) was named to the all-MAC second team. Miranda, Lamb and Magee have now been honored as all-MAC in each year of competition, with Miranda earning first-team status all three years.
Unger heads an impressive list of sophomore returnees which includes Eberst and Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). Forster had a successful freshman campaign, posting the MAC's fastest time in the 500 free, as well as the conference's second-fastest times in three other events. Her 500 free time also eclipsed the school mark set by Miranda.
Up Next: After the Tom Stubbs Relays, Miami dives right into their conference ledger, hitting the road for conference meets at Buffalo and Akron, respectively. The RedHawks visit the Bulls on Halloween night for a 4 p.m. meet, before driving to Akron, Ohio the next day, for a date with the Zips at 1 p.m.
