Miami Soccer Falls At Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo Bulls scored three unanswered goals, after trailing 1-0, to upend Miami University's women's soccer team, 3-1, in league play, Sunday afternoon in Buffalo, NY.

With the scored tied, 1-1, Emily Russell, the MAC's leading scorer, headed a ball past freshman goalkeeper Megan Ortner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula). The goal came off a cross from Russell's twin sister, Devon, in the 59th minute.

The RedHawks got on the board first when junior Jessica Godshall (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) crossed a pass into the box to junior Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) in the 35th minute. Swinehart took the pass from the left side, and headed it past Bulls keeper Anna-Lesa Culvert.

Buffalo knotted the game at 1-1 in the 38th minute. Jenny Dannecker made a run through the midfield and caught a RedHawk defender out of position. Dannecker was able to set herself and put the ball past Ortner.

UB added an insurance goal with 89 seconds left in the match. With the RedHawks pushing forward, the Bull forwards were able to capitalize. Emily Russell took advantage of Miami's two-player defense to tally her second goal of the game, and put the Bulls up, 3-1.

Ortner made four saves for Miami, while Culvert made five of her own.

The loss is the first by Miami to Buffalo, after going 6-0-1 in the first seven meetings. The RedHawks had won six straight against the Bulls.

The RedHawks return to the road, Friday, Oct. 17 at Ohio, before heading to Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 19. Miami will kick of in Athens, Ohio, at 4 p.m., while Sunday's match in Huntington, W. Va., kicks of at 1 p.m.
