BACK IN ACTION: Miami's women's swimming and diving team will look to show their dominance in 2003 as they did in 2002 when the Red and White travel to Keating Natatorium, the home of St. Xavier High School, to face the University of Cincinnati on Friday before heading north to face Oakland University on Saturday in Rochester, Mich. Miami has not swam in a scoring meet since they placed fifth at the Miami Invitational on Dec. 5-7.
The RedHawks took their swimming show across national lines over the Christmas break when they traveled to Paradise Island, Bahamas to train for 2003. During their time down south, Miami swam in five non-scoring relays against Georgia Tech on Dec. 19 in Nassau, Bahamas.
HITTIN' THE BOOKS: In addition to the excellence Miami has achieved in the water, Miami proved solid in the classroom as well. Head coach Dave Jenning's 47 student-athletes earned a 3.15 team grade point average as the RedHawks stayed on the academic all-American list. The Red and White had 59.6 percent of their swimmers earn above a 3.0 GPA and 15 swimmers were named to the dean's list.
NATIONAL STATEMENT: Junior Amy Miranda and freshman Katie Forster have made quite a statement for Miami swimming as they hold the nations 17th and 22nd fastest times in the 1650-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, respectively as of Dec. 25 according to CollegeSwimming.com with their times at the Minnesota Invitational on Nov 22. Forster also has the 39th fastest time in the 1650-yard freestyle.
Miranda earned Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week honor on Nov. 26 when she and Forster finished second and third behind Wisconsin's Carly Piper in the 1650-yard freestyle with times of 16:30.70 and 16:51.35, respectively in Minneapolis, Minn. With Miranda's time, she broke the MAC record time, the Miami record, set a Miami record in the first 1,000-yards of the race and earned an NCAA B-cut.
Miranda and Forster continued to show their ability in the distance events when Forster took second with Miranda swimming in fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:48.96 and 4:51.44.
Forster broke a Miami record, set a personal-best by over three seconds, missed a MAC record by less than a second and also earned an NCAA B-cut.
Miranda joined junior Casey Mangano as MAC Swimmers of the Week during the 2002-03 campaign. Mangano earned the accolade Nov. 20, one week prior to Miranda.
