OXFORD, Ohio - Nebraska-Omaha became only the second Central Collegiate Hockey Association team to register points in Miami University's Goggin Ice Arena as it skated to a 2-2 with the RedHawks on Saturday night. The RedHawks opened up a 2-0 advantage in the first period, but allowed two UNO goals over the final 40 minutes to finish in a draw. The Red and White is 6-0-2 this season against CCHA opponents in Goggin Ice Arena.
A five-minute checking from behind major penalty on UNO's Scotty Turner was just what the RedHawks needed at 14:41 in the first period. With the man advantage freshman defenseman Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.) quickly capitalized with his third goal of the season at 15:53 to give Miami a 1-0 lead. Greene beat UNO goalie Dan Ellis with a hard wrist shot high to the glove side. Finding Greene open on the right wing for the assist was senior Nick Jardine (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).
The RedHawks were not finished scoring on the power play, however, as junior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) netted his 14th goal at 17:20, giving Miami a quick 2-0 advantage. Hogeboom's power-play goal, his 10th of the season, was a mirror image from the night before as he deflected a shot over Ellis's pads. Shooting the initial shot that Hogeboom deflected into the goal, and earning an assist, was junior Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario).
After allowing those two Miami goals, Ellis locked down in the crease as he finished the first period with 14 saves. Ellis stopped 12 more Miami shots in the second period as the Mavericks crept back into the game, 2-1, when senior Joe Pereira scored a power-play marker of his own at 3:44. Assisting on Pereira's third goal of the season was freshman Joel Andresen.
Miami continued to have solid scoring chances in the third period, but the play of Ellis between the pipes prevented the RedHawks from scoring that all-important go-ahead goal. Instead the Mavericks patiently waited until freshman Mike Lefley stuffed home his fourth goal of the season with only 2:22 remaining in the game to force overtime.
The Red and White got three shots on net in the extra period, but again Ellis kept the Miami offense at bay finishing the game with 43 saves. Senior goalie David Burleigh (North Vancouver, B.C.) posted solid numbers for the RedHawks on the other end as he stopped 30 UNO shots in the 2-2 draw.
The RedHawks hit the road next weekend as they travel to CCHA foe Western Michigan for a series on Jan. 17-18. They return home to Goggin Ice Arena the next weekend as they host the top team in the league, Ferris State, on Jan. 24-25.
