Final Stats
In the RedHawk's first Mid-American Conference game of its 2002 campaign, Miami opened in impressive fashion with a 2-0 victory at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio.
The RedHawks and Rockets went scoreless through the first half, but it only took three minutes into the second half for the Red and White to get on the board. Sophomore Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, OH/Worthington) ripped a shot from beyond the right side of the Toledo penalty box into the far-post beyond the reach of diving Rocket goalie Elise Donovan. The assist was given to fellow sophomore Laura Freel (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) for passing the ball over to Swinehart for the game-winner.
Miami added another goal 19 minutes later off another assist from Freel. On the second goal, Freel found senior and MAC all-time points leader Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) who hit a hard shot from the left side that rebounded off Donovan's hands and into the goal.
Senior goalie Katie Karlander (Carmel, IN/Syracuse) led the Miami defense by recording her second consecutive shutout and saving four shots while her counterpart Donovan tallied four saves.
Miami had many opportunities to blow the game open in the second half with numerous shots on goal. The Red and White outshot the Midnight Blue and Gold by a decisive 13-6 margin in the second half of play.
"I'm real happy to get our first MAC win," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "We executed a real smart game against Toledo."
With the win, Miami improves its record to 3-1-1 and 1-0-0 in the MAC while Toledo drops to 2-2-0 and 0-2-0 in the MAC.
The RedHawks will face Kent State on Sunday at 1 p.m. for their MAC home opener and Miami Schedule Cup Day at Miami Soccer Field.
