Buffalo Softball Bullies Miami in Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo's Stacey Evans and Heather Robbins befuddled Miami hitters for 14 innings Saturday, May 4, throwing 2-0 and 6-0 shutouts, respectively, in a doubleheader sweep of the RedHawks. Evans gave up just a pair of base hits in her gem while the RedHawks left 11 runners on base in the second game.

Allison Round's fifth long ball of the season, a two-run shot to center in the fifth, provided the first game's only runs.

In a matchup of two of the top first-year hurlers in the Mid-American Conference, Buffalo's Stacey Evans out-dueled Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) in a one-hour-and-fifteen-minute affair. Evans stifled the RedHawk bats, allowing just two hits - both singles by sophomore Jessica Zogaib (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) - while striking out eight. Only one Miami baserunner got as far as second base.

Aside from her one mistake, Poggendorf was effective. She gave up four hits and fanned seven in her 23rd complete game of the season, breaking the school freshman record, set by Tracy Logue in 1991.

Buffalo (12-25, 7-16) got the sticks going early on in the second game, putting up a three-spot in the first inning. Melissa Pace and Allison Round sandwiched RBI doubles around Julie Hibner's run-scoring groundout to put the Bulls ahead 3-0.

Miami (16-36, 7-15) threatened to cut into the lead in the second when it loaded the bases with one out, but it failed to break through. Freshman Keri McCready (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) hit a grounder to the third baseman, who got the forceout at home. The next batter, sophomore Jamie Carey (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights), hit a flair to shallow center that was caught by a sprawling Ann Magur, and the RedHawks came away with nothing.

Three more Bull runs came across in the second, one each on a Pace base knock, a Breanne Nasti sacrifice fly and a Magur two-bagger.

Junior Angie Gerber (La Salle, Mich./Mason) went 2-for-4.

Poggendorf struck out nine batters on the day, giving her 148 for the season and moving her into second place on the school's single-season list. She needs six more to take over first.

Miami and Buffalo conclude their seasons Sunday, May 5, with a single game starting at noon, the winner of which clinches sixth place in the East Division.
