Miami Softball Salvages Split in Twinbill with Dayton

April 17, 2002

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Angie Gerber (La Salle, Mich./Mason) hit a two-run home run and freshman Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to lead Miami to a 3-1 win over Dayton on Wednesday, April 17 at Stuart Field. The victory earned the RedHawks a split in a rain-interrupted doubleheader as they dropped the first game 3-0.

Senior Nicki Pelfrey (Fremont, Ohio/Fremont Ross) got the scoring started in the second game when she doubled in Gerber in the top of the first to stake Poggendorf to a 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, with two outs and sophomore Jessica Zogaib (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) on second, Gerber picked out a pitch she liked and went the other way it, depositing it over the leftfield fence for her sixth long ball of the year. It ties her with Theresa Shepherd and Kara Brown for second place on the school's single-season home run list.

Poggendorf took a no-hitter into the fourth, but Cassie Gross's solo jack to left with one out broke it up and made the score 3-1.

That was the only damage done against Poggendorf. She struck out seven and walked one to improve her record to 13-16, putting her in a third-place tie with Kristy Burch for most wins in a season by a Miami hurler.

In the first game, an RBI single by Spencer Izor in the bottom of the first put Dayton up 1-0.

Just before the top of the sixth, the rains came, causing the game to be delayed an hour and a half.

When play resumed, Miami (15-30) went quietly in its half of the inning, but the Flyers (14-18) put runners on first and second with one out, prompting head coach Angie Jacobs to call on Poggendorf to relieve senior starter Abbey Arnold (Dana Point, Calif./St. Margaret's).

The first batter she faced, Izor, grounded a ball back to the circle. Poggendorf fielded it and went to third for the force out, but her throw was high, glancing off the glove of freshman Sarah Buffie (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian), and a run scored to make it 2-0.

With runners on second and third, the next hitter, Tracie Weinheimer, hit a sac fly to left to plate pinch-runner Anna Poeppelman with the Flyers' final run.

Dayton starter Dana Campbell went the distance, striking out six and walking one to improve to 11-6 on the year. Senior Keri Brisnehan (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and freshman Peri Zakin (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) were the only RedHawks to collect hits off of her. Zakin's fifth-inning double was the first extra-base hit of her career.

Miami, which is two games behind Marshall for the final spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, plays a crucial doubleheader at 1 p.m. on April 20 in Oxford against Ball State.
