March 7, 2002

Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Junior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit three of Miami University's five home runs and drove in five as the RedHawks downed Cincinnati, 11-5, Thursday afternoon at Johnny Bench Field. After entering the season with six career dingers, Carlin has five home runs in just four games.

The RedHawks scored in seven of the nine innings, and started in the first as junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) and Carlin hit back-to-back homers off UC starter Rob Reel. The Bearcats would take the lead in the third when Aaron Moll hit his fifth home run of the year, and second in two days, with two men on to put UC up one.

Miami evened the score in the fourth when freshman Paul Frietch (Montgomery, Ohio/Moeller) doubled in freshman John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), and took the lead in the fifth when David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) doubled and later scored on a Galloway single. UC's Brad Dorrmann doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and tied the game at 4-4 when Jake Smith's single drove him in.

Frietch drove in Slone in the sixth to take the lead again, but UC tied it on Brad Schutz's solo home run off junior Adam Keel (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). That was the only hit Keel would allow in three innings as he picked up the win to even his record at 1-1.

Carlin put the RedHawks ahead for good in the seventh when he followed a bunt base hit and an error with a three-run shot off UC reliever and losing pitcher Kenny Fields (0-1). Junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) tripled and scored in the eighth, and Carlin and Slone homered in the ninth to finish the scoring. Slones roundtripper was the first of his career at Miami.

Slone went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Galloway had two hits, two RBI and scored twice. Frietch also drove in a pair. RedHawk starter sophomore Justin Farina (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Christopher's) allowed three runs in four innings on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

UC's Schutz was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and Erik Eitel had two hits. Reel lasted 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with one walk and one strikeout. Fields gave up four runs, three earned, in 2.2 innings.

The RedHawks play next when they embark on their Spring Break trip to Boca Raton, Fla., where they open with LaSalle on Sunday, March 10, at 10 a.m.
