Lexington, OH - After a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory yesterday versus Kentucky, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the Holiday Inn North Classic at Applebee's Park, scoring three runs off junior starter Adam Keel (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) in the first inning and downing the RedHawks 6-3.
Miami cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning on a two-run homerun by junior outfielder David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), scoring Eddie Tillitz (Martinsville, IN/Martinsville) who doubled to open the inning. The Wildcats responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, forcing a Miami pitching change from Keel to senior left-hander Russ Bayer (Napierville, Ill./North). Bayer silenced the Wildcats bats over the next 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, while striking out seven.
Junior first baseman Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) scored the RedHawks only other run in the sixth inning, hitting a opposite-field homerun to right. The homerun was his first at Miami after transferring from Central Michigan after last season.
Kentucky added a late insurance run off junior right-hander Korey Kirkpatrick (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) to cruise to the win. The win drops Miami to 1-1 on the season, while improving the Wildcats mark to 5-7. The RedHawks close out the three-game series with Kentucky tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Applebee's Park.
