YPSILANTI, Mich. - In an outcome that certainly bodes well for the conference meet that is three weeks away, Miami's women's swimming and diving team defeated Eastern Michigan, 161-139, and Buffalo, 230-70, Saturday afternoon in Ypsilanti, Mich. to secure an undefeated season in the Mid-American Conference. The men were not as fortunate, however, dropping a 139-104 decision to the Eagles while defeating the Bison, 205-35.
The women finish their dual meet slate 14-1 and 8-0 in the MAC, while the men are 12-2 and 7-1. Each team's only other loss was to Purdue. For the women, it is their best dual meet record ever and their first undefeated season in the MAC since 1997, while the men tied the 1966-67 and 1974-75 teams' record for wins in a season.
Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshmen Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) and Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) all were multiple winners for the RedHawk women. Miranda took first in the 500 freestyle, in 5:02.59, and 1,000 free, in a MAC-season-best time of 10:15.60, while Lamb claimed the top prize in the 200 back, finishing in 2:06.06, and 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 4:33.13. Gonso swept the diving events, narrowly defeating Eastern Michigan's Anca Tilea, 260.45-260.00, in the one-meter, then beating her in the three-meter, 285.15-267.70.
Other winners for the women were senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), in the 200 breast (2:22.47), freshman Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming), in the 200 butterfly (2:05.78), and the 400 free relay team of seniors Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and Colleen Rambasek (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) and juniors Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Kristen Sivard (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), who reached the deck in 3:32.25.
On the men's side, senior John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) came away with two individual victories and was part of a winning relay. He triumphed in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:00.38, and 200 fly, outdistancing the competition with a 1:50.62 clocking. In the 400 medley relay, Carroll teamed up with senior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) and sophomores David Fraas (Ashland, Ohio/St. Francis) and Brad Bartel (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) to win the event in a MAC-season-best time of 3:22.84. DiSalle also came in first in the 200 back (1:50.57).
Also bringing home first-place finishes for the men were junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn), in the 200 free (1:40.77), and senior Dylan Nichols, who took the top prize on the one-meter (297.10) and three-meter (303.15) boards.
In their final tune-up before the MAC Championships, both teams will compete Feb. 14-16 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. Morning sessions begin at 11 a.m., while evening sessions start at 7 p.m.
