Junior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) capped off her record-breaking weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. with the Mid-American Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week honor.
Miranda is the second consecutive RedHawk swimmer to win the award. Junior Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, OH/St. Ursula) earned the distinction last week.
Miranda finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:30.70 on the third day of the Gopher Invitational, which featured many of the top teams in the nation. Miranda's time broke the MAC record, the Miami record, set a Miami record in the first 1,000-yards of the race and earned an NCAA B-cut. On of the first day of competition, Miranda earned fourth place with a lifetime best finish in the 500-yard freestyle which also eclipsed the old Miami record with teammate Katie Forster (Centerville, OH/Centerville) who placed second in the same race. During the second day, Miranda helped Miami to a fourth place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Miranda has been named to the all-MAC first-team in her first two seasons at Miami. The junior won the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle along with placing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2002 MAC Championships. Miranda's time in the 1650-yard freestyle of 16:44.35 met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard. Miranda also captured first in the 1,650-yard freestyle, second in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2001 conference meet.
