Final Stats
With the Mid-American Conference regular season championship locked up, the RedHawks did not suffer a let down at Western Michigan as senior Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) scored two goals on the way to a 3-1 victory for Miami.
Berkemeier wasted little time in proving that the Red and White would not be satisfied with nine MAC wins. Berkemeier ran alone through the box and headed home a cross from the left side. The assists went to redshirt junior Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) and senior Katie Milligan (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) only 57 seconds into the contest.
After Milligan's first assist of the year, the senior midfielder scored her first goal on only her fourth shot of the season. Milligan's goal also came on a header when junior Tricia Gill (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) served the ball up while the clock read 17:49.
Miami went into the half with a 2-0 advantage and allowed the Broncos one shot on goal in the first half.
The Broncos only goal came at the 60-minute mark. Freshman Andrea Tyler served the ball into the middle of the box where senior Mary Gignac managed to get a leg on the ball for freshman Stephanie Johnson's shot into the upper left corner of the net past Miami goalkeeper Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven).
Berkemeier capped the scoring off when she ran through the Bronco back line off a pass from Altiero to beat Bronco goalkeeper Marjie Fleshman one-on-one from 12 yards out to bring the final score to 3-1 in the 88th minute.
The RedHawks improved their overall record to 13-2-1 and 10-1-0 in the conference. The Broncos dropped their record to 6-7-1 and 4-4-1 in the MAC.
Miami will begin a three-game homestand on Friday when they take on the Wright State Raiders at 3 p.m. on Miami Soccer Field. Miami will look for their 11th MAC victory on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Marshall Thundering Herd come to play in Oxford.
