CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the second time in as many weeks, a RedHawk was named Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week. This time it was senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), who won a combined six events against Oakland and Kenyon last weekend. Freshman diver Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) received the honor last week.
Nayes won the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 1:06.36 and 2:21.18, respectively, as well as the 200 individual medley in 2:06.31 in Miami's 178-118 throttling of the Golden Grizzlies on Friday afternoon. Her time in the 200 breast is the fastest this season in the MAC and her clocking in the 200 IM ranks second in the conference. She also was part of the second-place 200 medley relay team.
The following evening she took top honors in the 200 IM, in a time of 2:06.33, and 200 back, reaching the deck in 2:09.22, and swam the second leg of the RedHawks' first-place 400 medley relay, which finished in 3:56.48, in a 150-90 romp over Kenyon. Her 200 breast time of 2:30.79 was good for third place as well.
This is the second time this season Nayes has garnered this accolade. She won it back on Nov. 13, 2001 after capturing first in the 200 back and 400 IM and helping the 400 medley relay team to top honors against Wright State.
The RedHawks face their first MAC competition in almost two months when they travel to Toledo on Jan. 26 for a meet that also includes Akron.
