OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) became Miami's first triple-winner of the season while sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) each were victorious in two events as the RedHawks (7-1, 2-0 Mid-American) defeated Oakland, 178-118, Friday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Nayes kicked off the meet as a member of the runner-up 200 medley relay team, but that was the only time she would not stand in the victory circle. She outdistanced the field in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.36), 200 breast (2:21.18) and 200 individual medley (2:06.31). Her 200 breast time is the fastest of anyone this season in the MAC and her clocking in the 200 IM is the second fastest.
Miranda took the top spot in the 200 and 500 freestyle, finshing in 1:55.69 and a MAC-season-best 5:01.48, respectively. Gonso followed up her record-setting performance last Friday against Cincinnati, when she broke the school marks in one- and three-meter diving, with first-place finishes on both boards. She won the one-meter with a score of 265.57 and dominated the three-meter, amassing 302.40 points en route to victory.
The most exciting race of the meet was the 1,000 free, in which freshman Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and the Golden Grizzlies' Danielle Ward went right down to the wire, with Magee touching out Ward, 10:18.07 to 10:18.10. Magee's time is the second fastest this year in the MAC and lowers her career best in the event by nearly eight seconds.
Miami's other individual winners were senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), who won the 50 free in 24.18, and freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), who claimed the top prize in the 200 back with a 2:05.54 clocking.
Miami gets right back to action Jan. 19 at 4 p.m., when it hosts Division III powerhouse Kenyon College.
