OXFORD, Ohio - Freshman diver Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was rewarded for her record-setting performance in Miami's 156-87 win over Cincinnati last Friday by being selected Mid-American Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week. It is the first such honor she has received in her brief tenure at Miami.
One of the RedHawks' most heralded recruits in recent years, Gonso swept the one- and three-meter diving events against the Bearcats in grand fashion, destroying a pair of five-year-old records with her performances. On the one-meter board, her score of 311.02 placed her first by nearly 57 points, broke Kelly Harper's 1996 mark of 288.45 and set a season best in the MAC. Gonso's 309.67 tally in the three-meter competition was almost 30 ahead of the runner-up and smashed the previous standard of 291.00, set by Caroline Kelley in 1996.
Both of Gonso's scores provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Zone C Diving Qualifying meet, which will be held March 15-16 at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
Of the 10 diving competitions in which Gonso has participated this year, five one-meter and five three-meter, she has finished first five times, second on four occasions and fourth once.
Gonso and her teammates are in action 6 p.m., Jan. 18 against Oakland and 4 p.m., Jan. 19 versus Kenyon. Both meets are at home.
