OXFORD, Ohio - Cincinnati kept it close for a while, but Miami's men's and women's swimming and diving teams steadily pulled away from the Bearcats and came out with convincing wins Friday night at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. The women posted a 156-87 triumph, while their male counterparts claimed a 149-94 victory.
Highly touted freshman diver Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) continued to live up to the hype as she broke school records in both the one- and three-meter diving events. Her one-meter score of 311.02 demolished the previous mark of 288.45, set by Kelly Harper in 1996, while her three-meter total of 309.67 blew away Caroline Kelley's 1996 record of 291.00. Both scores provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Zone C Qualifying meet.
The other double-winner for the women was Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), who took first in the 400 individual medley (4:27.98) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.30).
Other individual winners for the RedHawk women were sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.88), senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) in the 100 free (52.38) and freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) in the 100 back (58.95). The women's 800 free relay team also reached the deck first, in a time of 7:48.25.
For the men, sophomore David Fraas (Ashland, Ohio/St. Francis) exerted his dominance in the freestyle sprints, as he took the top spot in the 50 (21.20) and 100 free (46.46). Junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn) beat everyone to the wall in the 200 free (1:40.79), while senior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) came away victorious in the 100 back (52.33). In the 100 breast, sophomore Brad Bartel (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) captured first with a 59.58 clocking. The 800 free relay squad also won by a more than five-second margin.
Though they did not set any records, the duo of freshman Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and senior Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) swept the one and three-meter boards, respectively. Donohue finished with a score of 304.80, while Nichols won in a landslide with a 326.10.
The women's team returns to action 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 against Oakland University in Oxford. Both the men and women then take on Kenyon College the following day at 4 p.m., also at home.
