DAYTON, Ohio (March 31) -- A three-run double by Nicki Pelfrey in the top of the seventh inning catapulted Miami to a 4-2 triumph in the second game of a doubleheader at Wright State University (15-11). Miami (12-16) fell in the opening game, 4-1.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, which they held on to until the sixth inning when the RedHawks knotted the contest when Pelfrey, who had a hand in all four RedHawk runs, scored on a sacrifice fly by Kristina Mortaloni.
With bases loaded, two outs and a full count in the top of the seventh, Pelfrey's heroic double to score Mary Neal, Amber Arnold and Jessica Zogaib lifted the Red and White to a 4-1 advantage. The Raiders tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. A one-run double pulled WSU to within two, 2-4. With bases loaded and two outs, Wright State ended its comeback on a groundout to the pitcher.
Amber Arnold threw a complete game to improve to 6-7. She gave up two runs off seven hits and walked two, while striking out eight. Three of those strikeouts came in succession to end the fourth inning with runners on second and third.
In the first game, Miami scored the first run in the top of the third on an Angie Gerber RBI single, which scored Neal, who was pinch running for Taylor. Taylor opened up the inning with a single. The Miami lead, however, was short-lived as the Raiders tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
WSU's Kim Sycks homered in the fifth to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead. A single and a pair of double increased the advantage to 4-1, which remained the final score.
Abbey Arnold threw 4.2 innings and earned the loss in the circle to drop to 5-10. She gave up four runs (three earned) off seven hits and walked two. She also struckout three batters. Twin sister Amber threw the remaining 1.1 innings, collecting four strikeouts and giving up no runs and no hits.
Miami returns home to host Ohio State in a single game at 4 p.m. Tuesday (April 3).
