RedHawks Split Pair With Eastern Michigan and Buffalo
OXFORD, Ohio -- With the Mid-American Conference Championship less than a month away, Miami and Eastern Michigan look like the teams to beat, and this was evident in Saturday's dual meet with the two squads and Buffalo.
With the RedHawks trailing Eastern Michigan by six points entering the final event, which was the 400 yard freestyle relay, Miami would need to take first and either second on third to win. Unfortunately for the RedHawks, they took first-place but neither second or third. Eastern Michigan edged Miami 122-121 and finished the regular season with a 7-0 record, while the RedHawks finished 5-2. Head coach Pete Lindsay's squad defeated Buffalo handily 189-52.
Miami was once again led by junior Kevin Mulgrew (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic), who was victorious in both the 500 and 1,650 yard freestyle, edging out EMU's Matthew Ense in both events. Mulgrew won the 500 with a time of 4:37.94 and the 1,650 with a mark of 15:46.50. The two wins give Mulgrew 17 individual victories on the season.
Junior diver Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) continues to be the favorite entering the MAC Championship on both the one- and three-meter boards. Nichols took first-place in both events scoring a 303.60 on the one-meter and finishing with a 295.80 on the three-meter.
Other first-place finishers for Miami were freshman David Fraas (Ashland, Ohio/St. Francis), who won the 100 yard freestlye (46.51), sophomore Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn), who won the 200 yard freestyle (1:41.42), and junior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis), who took first in the 200 yard individual medley (1:52.46).
The RedHawks are back in action Feb. 24-25 at the Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The morning events start at 10 a.m. and the evening events begin at 6 p.m.
