OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's women's swimming and diving team fought until the very end, but it was not enough to overcome the Michigan State Spartans, who won the eighth annual Miami Invitational by a 1,406.50-1,376 margin over the RedHawks. Miami's men came in fourth with a score of 907.50.
Trailing 952.50-948 heading into the last day, the Miami women actually held a 1,058-1,022.50 advantage after the first event of Sunday's evening session-the 1,650-yard freestyle. But Michiga State placed swimmers second, fourth, sixth and eighth in the next event-the 200 backstroke-to regain the lead for good. Kenyon took third with 1,347 points.
Kenyon's men extended their lead over Michigan State by about 100 points on the final day of competition to take home a comfortable 1,254.50-1,105.50 win over the Spartans. Western Kentucky finished third on the men's side with a score of 944.
By taking first in the 200 butterfly (1:48.13), senior John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) became the RedHawks' only multiple winner. He won the 400 individual medley Saturday night.
Senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) joined senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) as Miami's only female individual champions at the meet. Janura edged Kenyon's Agnese Ozolina in the 100 free, 51.35 to 51.53.
Another notable performance came from sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), whose second-place time of 16:45.83 in the 1,650 free provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) came up big in the 200 butterfly with a 2:03.52 clocking, good for a runner-up showing. The women's other second-place finish on the evening belonged to the 400 free relay team, which touched the wall in 3:29.67.
After winning the 400 IM Saturday night, senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) came back strong on Sunday, placing third in the 200 breast (2:21.57). Freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) also placed third in her specialty, the 200 back (2:04.00).
Both of the men's other finalists, junior Kelly Ball (Granger, Ind./Penn) in the 200 fly and senior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) in the 200 back, finished fifth with times of 1:51.91 and 1:52.18, respectively.
Six meet and three pool records were broken Sunday night, and during the three-day Invitational, 19 meet and eight pool records toppled. Western Kentucky's Brandi Carey set new meet and pool marks in the 50 and 100 free, as well as established a new meet standard in the 200 IM. Cincinnati's Maria Oberg set meet and pool records in the 500 and 1,650 free, while the Hilltoppers' Gord Veldman broke meet marks in the 100 and 200 back, setting a pool record in the former.
Both Miami teams will train over the holiday break in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Their next meet is Jan. 9, 2002 against Cincinnati.
