Final Stats

Bowling Green, Ohio - Three power-play goals and six unanswered goals between the first and second period surged Bowling Green (2-5-2, 2-4-1 CCHA) to a 9-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the Miami University (5-3-1, 3-1-1 CCHA) hockey teamon Friday night in the BGSU Ice Arena. One high point for the RedHawks in the setback was freshman A.J. Greco (Williamsville, N.Y.) who tallied his first collegiate goal in the contest.

For only the fourth time this season the RedHawks struck first as senior Evan Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) found the back of the net 3:07 into the contest. Cheverie's goal, his third of the season gave Miami a 1-0 lead for a brief 37 seconds before Bowling Green retaliated with a goal of its own.

The Falcons, against a strong Miami penalty killing unit which had killed 28 of its last 29 penalties, tied the game at one apiece with a power-play goal from senior captain Greg Day at 3:40. BGSU didn't take long to score its second goal of the contest as Steve Brudzewski scored 15 seconds later to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage. The Falcons held the 2-1 lead for a little over four minutes before Miami senior captain Jason Deskins (Warren, Mich.) registered his second goal of the season to lock the score, 2-2, at 7:58. Recording an assist on Miami's second goal was junior Danny Stewart (Fort McMurray, Alberta).

The Falcons continued the fast scoring pace with two more strikes before the end of the first 20 minutes. Day tallied his second goal of the contest at 9:04 while both teams were skating four-on-four. BGSU extended its lead to two, 4-2, when Tyler Knight and Colen Pappas found Ryan Wetterberg open in front of the Miami net for an easy score at 14:35. Miami had several scoring opportunities in the waning minutes of the first period but was unable to score on two power plays.

Despite two chances early in the second period on two-on-one breakaways, Miami failed to capitalize, hitting the post once and stopped by BGSU's goalie Tyler Masters on the other opportunity. Instead of two scores the momentum shifted in favor of the Falcons as they rattled off four unanswered goals in a span of 5:07.

BGSU defensemen Marc Barlow initiated the onslaught with a power-play goal at 8:38 and Ryan Minnabarriet registered the Falcons fourth goal of the period at 13:45. Scoring two goals in between Barlow and Minnabarriet were Wetterberg with his second of the contest and Grady Moore.

Deskins stopped the RedHawks' bleeding with a power-play goal at 17:25 in the second period to cut the deficit to five, 8-3. Senior Mike Glumac (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and freshman Joe Pomaranski (Plymouth, Mich.) were credited with assist's on Deskins third goal of the season.

The Falcons posted their ninth goal of the game at 3:43 in the third period when Minnabarriet scored his second goal of the contest on a power play. Minnabarriet's tally gave BGSU a 9-3 lead and marked the first time since a 9-4 setback at Michigan on Feb. 27, 1999, that the RedHawks had allowed nine or more goals.

Greco cut the Falcons lead to five with his first career goal at 9:08 in the third period. Sophomore Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario) found Greco open on the wing to record his fourth helper of the season.

Miami suffers its third loss of the season despite outshooting the Falcons 30-23. Splitting the goalkeeping duties were juniors David Burleigh (North Vancouver, B.C.) and David Bowen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), making five and nine saves, respectively. Burleigh dropped his second game of the season, allowing five BGSU goals.

The RedHawks seek redemption tomorrow night, Nov. 10 at 7:05 p.m. when they conclude the weekend tilt versus Bowling Green. Miami attempts to end a three-game losing streak to the Falcons in tomorrow nights matchup.
