OXFORD, Ohio - The Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center will host from Nov. 30-Dec. 2 the eighth annual Miami Invitational, one of this weekend's biggest collegiate swimming and diving meets in the country. Nineteen teams will compete for three days in 42 men's and women's events. Preliminary sessions begin daily at 9 a.m., finals at 6:30 p.m., except on Sunday when they go off at 6 p.m.
The meet is comprised of schools from Divisions I (12), II (2) and III (5) and has an academic feel to it, with squads from such institutions as Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania and William & Mary. Enrollments of the competing schools are varied as well, with undergraduate populations ranging from that of Wheeling Jesuit (1,200) to Michigan State (43,189).
Expected to compete for the men's team title is Miami, the second-place finisher in the Mid-American Conference a year ago, Kenyon, which has won 22 straight Div. III championships, Cincinnati, which is coming off a second-place conference finish in 2000-01, and Pennsylvania, which last season had its first winning league record in a decade.
The women's side looks to be slightly more competitive, with Miami, which placed second in the MAC in 2000-01, Indiana, the reigning third-place team in the Big Ten, Kenyon, which saw its 18-year Div. III national championship string broken last year, Michigan State, which has won four dual meets in a row, and Cincinnati, which won the conference crown last year, all in the running.
Ball State, Lewis, Northern Illinois, Oberlin, Buffalo (men only), Illinois (women divers only), Western Kentucky and Wright State round out the rest of the field.
