Final Stats
East Lansing, Mich. - The Miami University (6-4-1, 4-2-1 Central Collegiate) hockey team suffered its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 setback in Munn Ice Arena at Michigan State (7-2-1, 6-2-1 CCHA). Junior goaltender Ryan Miller recorded his fourth shutout of the season and 22nd of his career en route to helping the Spartans to their sixth conference victory.
For just the second time this season the RedHawks and their opponent ended the first period with no score on the score board. Last year's Hobey Baker winner, Miller, stopped nine RedHawk shots while junior David Burleigh (North Vancouver, B.C.) registered seven saves in the first stanza.
Coincidental penalties at 8:21 and 14:52 in the first period resulted in four-on-four action but no goals, despite several scoring opportunities by both teams. Miami's best scoring chance in the first period came when sophomore Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) missed the top shelf on a three-on-one break at about the 14:00 mark.
The first period concluded with a ruckus behind the Miami net which resulted in five two-minute minor penalties, and more importantly a RedHawk power play to open the second period. Miami never managed to set up its power play and instead put one of its own in the penalty box at 2:08. On the ensuing power play, Michigan State notched the contest's first goal when Joe Goodenow scored his fourth of the season at 3:08.
On their home ice, the Spartans increased their lead to two, 2-0, when defenseman Brad Fast picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and converted the turnover for his fourth goal of the season. Fast's tally was unassisted at 8:05 in the second period. MSU mainained its lead by holding the RedHawks scoreless on two power plays in the period.
Defenseman John-Michael Liles scored the Spartans second power-play goal of the game at 11:55 in the third period to give MSU a 3-0 advantage. Liles goal turned out to be nothing more than insurance as Miller went on to stop 23 Miami shots, extending his streak to 232:12 scoreless minutes against the RedHawks. Miami's last goal against Miller was in a 5-1 defeat on March 11, 2000, in the CCHA playoffs. Burleigh finished the game for Miami with 23 saves, allowing three goals, which included two power-play strikes.
The RedHawks wrap up their weekend tilt against Michigan State tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in Munn Ice Arena.
