RedHawks Have Strong Showing Against Ohio and Bowling Green

Miami's Men's Squad Sweeps Competition, While Women Take One of Two
ATHENS, Ohio -- Miami University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a strong showing Saturday afternoon against Mid-American Conference rivals Ohio and Bowling Green. The men's team improved its MAC record to 4-1 after defeating Ohio 130-104 and Bowling Green 136-98, while the women moved to 4-2 after defeating Bowling Green 188-547 but falling to Ohio 158-85.
The women's team was led by senior diver Cassie Eakins (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia). Eakins took home first-place plaudits on both the one- and three-meter boards. She finished the one-meter competition with a score of 259.55 and the three-meter with a score of 267.50.
The RedHawks received second-place finishes from juniors Hillary Mason (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) (500 and 1,000 freestyle), Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) (50 and 100 freestyle), senior Molly Wiethorn (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) (400 IM) and freshman Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula).
Miami's men's team was led by juniors Kevin Mulgrew (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic) and Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike).
Mulgrew took first-place in both the 500 and 1,000 yard freestyle events. He won the 500 with a time of 4:41.47 and the 1,000 with a time of 9:29.94. The two victories for Mulgrew gave him 15 individuals win for the 2000-01 season. Nichols completed the sweep in the one- and three-meter diving competition. He was victorious on the one-meter with a score of 267.00 and the three-meter with a score of 255.10.
Other first-place finishes on the men's side came from freshman David Fraas (Ashland, Ohio/St. Francis), who won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.88. Senior Will Sensenbrenner (Champaign, Ill./Central) followed Fraas up by winning the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.59. Juniors Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) and John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) finished first in the 200 yard butterfly and the 400 yard individual medley with times of 1:55.82 and 4:05.09, respectively. Freshman Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) took home top honors in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 47.90.
The men's and women's teams are back in action at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, when they take on Eastern Michigan and Buffalo at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
