RedHawks Fall to Boilermakers in Season-Opening Meet

The RedHawks were led by freshman Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), who was victorious in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle. She won the 500 with a time of 5:07.97 and the 1,650 17:08.40.
Miami got a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke from freshman Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) with a time of 2:25.99. Sophomore Lyndsay Barnes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) took home second-place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.70. The 800 freestyle relay team of sophomores Heather Kelley (Port Washington, Wis./Holy Angels) and Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and juniors Shannon Thomas (Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati C.D.) and Tara Jacobson (Barrington Hills, Ill./St. Bonaventure) with a time of 8:01.54.
Freshman Heidi Willemssen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) led the diving squad on both the one- and three-meter boards. She finished third on the one-meter with a total of 216.75 and second on the three-meter with a total of 162.10.
The RedHawks are back in action at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, when they compete against Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Kenyon at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Miami's first Mid-American Conference meet is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, against Ball State and Northern Illinois in Muncie, Ind.
