- Title:
- Associate Head Coach
Chuck Rey returns for his fifth season at Miami and his second as Associate Head Coach. His primary responsibilities involve recruiting, scouting and coaching the offense.
"Chuck is a quality Division I volleyball coach and gentleman who has earned the title of Associate Head Coach," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "'He continues to serve as our offensive coordinator and has successfully embraced all aspects of our program. His positive style of coaching, recruiting and his effective leadership is helping our program return to top-25 status. His loyalty and pride in the Miami volleyball program is remarkable and I am fortunate to work with him every single day."
The offense has improved each season since Rey's arrival, seeing a season-high team attack percentage last season of .257. That helped the RedHawks win the MAC regular season title for the first time since 1998 and return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. Under his tutelage Jenny Ingle set a new single-season school record in attack percentage in two straight years, hitting .367 in 2014 and an incredible .410 during her senior year. That ranked 17th in the entire NCAA. In addition, Rey has helped Paige Hill improve from a .337 attack percentage in 2014 to .360 as a senior in 2016, that was the third-highest single-season total in school history. In 2015, Ingle and Hill ranked as the top two players in the Mid-American Conference in attack percentage with the first and third best single-seasons in MAC history and were rewarded with spots on the All-MAC First Team.
Prior to arriving at Miami, Rey spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Winthrop. While there, Rey helped the Eagles to a Big South regular season championship in 2011. As the offensive coordinator, he led Winthrop to either first or second-place finishes in a multitude of offensive categories. He trained two Big South Players of the Year and one Big South Setter of the Year.
Prior to his time with Winthrop, Rey spent a season as a volunteer assistant at the University of Minnesota, working on setter training and offensive game planning for a team that was ranked sixth in the nation during the 2008 season. While at Minnesota, Rey was fortunate to work with 2008 and 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist, Lindsey Berg, as she returned to Minnesota to rehabilitate a minor knee surgery, as well as Lauren Gibbemyer, current USA National Team player. In addition, he helped train a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He also served as an assistant at Georgia Southern University.
Rey is very active in promoting the sport. He operates the popular volleyball coaching website, CoachRey.com, which has up to 15,000 visitors each month. Articles from his website have been published or sourced by USA Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), The Art of Coaching Volleyball, and a variety other volleyball publications. USA Volleyball just ranked CoachRey.com as one of the top "Blogs that make a difference". As a member of the USA Volleyball, Rey was a featured speaker alongside John Kessel (USA Volleyball Director of Sport Development) at a USA Volleyball Coaches Clinic. He is also a four-time featured speaker at the AVCA Convention and is the founder and chair of the First Time Attendees Committee. Rey is a leader and mentor in Miami University's Athletes-In-Action.
Chuck is married to his wife Lori. They live in Oxford, are active with Oxford Bible Fellowship Church, and are parents of (nearly) two-year old twins Tripp and Siena.
