Miami University Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny added Joe Lynn to his staff as an assistant coach in August, 2016.
Lynn boasts an extensive resume of coaching experience at both the Division I and II levels. He will serve as a cross country and distance coach at Miami. He has spent the past two years as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Hillsdale College after previous stints at Missouri and Grand Valley State.
“I'm excited to bring Joe to Miami because he has the ability to recruit and develop high-level talent,” Chorny said. “His presence will allow us to continue on with the vision of becoming one of the top men's and women's cross country teams in the NCAA.”
During his two years with the Chargers track and cross country programs, Lynn guided the Chargers to unprecedented success and was recognized nationally for doing so. Lynn captured every United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Assistant Coach of the Year honor, both at the regional and national level, in track during his two-year tenure with Hillsdale. The Chargers women’s cross country team posted a national runner-up finish in 2014 and took third nationally in 2015 while their indoor track squad was national runner-up in 2015 and 2016 with the women placing third outdoors in 2016.
Lynn was the head men's and women's cross country coach at the University of Missouri for three years, and took the Tigers to high levels of success. The men's cross country team earned its first NCAA Division I national ranking in 12 years back in October 2012, and he guided Missouri's women's team to a 10-spot improvement in the Midwest Regional Rankings in just one year.
Lynn served as an associate track and cross country coach at Grand Valley State University from December 2006 through August 2011, during which time the Lakers became an elite force nationally in the sport. By the end of Lynn's tenure in Allendale, the 2010-11 school year, Grand Valley State finished in first place across the board, with the women's team capturing conference titles in cross country, men's indoor track and women's outdoor track. GVSU’s crowning achievement came in his final year with the staff in 2010-11 when its women claimed national titles in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. The Lakers recorded 20 top-10 NCAA finishes and added five runner-up finishes in his tenure.
Added together, Lynn has helped teams accumulate 17 top-four NCAA finishes, including three NCAA team titles and eight NCAA runner-up finishes. He is a five-time USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year and a six-time USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. Lynn has mentored 16 individual national champions and 134 All-Americans. His student-athletes have excelled in the classroom as well, compiling 113 Academic All-American honors.
A native of Muskegon, Mich., Lynn graduated from Aquinas College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Sports Management in 2004. He also attained a Master of Science in Sport Administration from Louisville in 2007.
