Bailey Montgomery enters his third season on the Miami Baseball coaching staff.
In 2023, Miami won 21 games and produced a .262 team batting average, averaging better than seven runs a game. Ryland Zaborowski hit 20 home runs, tops in the MAC and one off the school single-season record, to lead the RedHawks’ offense. Cooper Weiss (Defensive Player of the Year) and a pair of pitchers (Kenten Egbert, First-Team All-MAC; Connor Oliver, Second-Team All-MAC) earned postseason recognition from the conference.
The RedHawks won 23 games in 2022 and hit .275 as a team, highlighted by designated hitter David Novak (.370) earning first-team All-MAC honors. Pitchers Jonathan Brand (First Team) and Zach Maxey (Second Team) were also named All-MAC. Freshman slugger Zach MacDonald hit 10 home runs in his first season, while eight different RedHawks drove in 20 or more runs. The RedHawks scored 10 or more runs 14 times on the season, punctuated by a 52-run series in a four-game sweep at Akron.
Coach Montgomery came to Oxford with prior stops in both the collegiate and professional ranks. Most recently, Montgomery served as the Assistant Baseball Coach at Butler University. While at Butler, he started as a first base/assistant hitting coach and outfield coach, in addition to serving as the program’s camp coordinator.
Before his time at Butler, Montgomery worked for both the Atlanta Braves as an Associate Scout and junior college powerhouse Wabash Valley College as Assistant Baseball Coach. While at Wabash, his responsibilities included being the recruiting coordinator, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Hitting Coach.
Montgomery also served as the Head Baseball Coach of the Lafayette Aviators. While with the Aviators he was in charge of recruiting the team, recruiting assistant coaches, scouting reports, and any lineup decisions. During the previous season, he served as the team hitting coach, helping Lafayette set franchise records in batting average, OPS, OBS, hits, RBI’s, and runs.
Montgomery played his college ball at Western Illinois University following a stint at Wabash Valley College. While at Wabash, he was a member of a team that made it to the Junior College World Series, where they ended up finishing in third. He then spent two years as a member of the Western Illinois squad.
