COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced its weekly awards presented by KJ Branding today, and Miami freshman Shaun McEwen was honored as the National's Defenseman of the Week.
McEwen entered last weekend with four total points in 31 appearances and then matched that output during a two-game series at Omaha. McEwen produced two assists Friday for the second multi-point game of his career and added a career-high five shots on goal. In Saturday's win over the Mavericks, McEwen opened the scoring with a power-play goal, the first of his career, and then added a shorthanded empty-netter to seal the outcome. McEwen was named the First Star of the Game as Miami secured the No. 7 seed in the upcoming NCHC Frozen Faceoff.
McEwen and Miami travel to second-seeded Denver this weekend for a best-of-three quarterfinal series beginning Friday, March 6 at 9 p.m. ET.
