CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Millie Cook scored two goals in the first 11 minutes of the match and the Miami University soccer team went on to earn its first victory of the season Thursday, defeating Queens University 3-2.
Caroline Palmer added what proved to be the deciding goal for the RedHawks, who improve to 1-1-0. The Royals fall to 0-1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cook got the Red and White off on the front foot just 97 seconds into the match, sliding a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to finish off an assist from Morhéa Hoefen. Hoefen started the play by stealing the ball near midfield and then cutting back on the attack to send a pass in Cook's direction.
- The RedHawks doubled their advantage in the 11th minute, as Cook took a pass from Sydney Thompson, made a move, and lofted a long, looping ball from outside the box that hooked inside the left goalpost to find the back of the net.
- The Red and White made it 3-0 in the 37th minute, as a Juliann Kidd throw-in found Palmer in the box. Palmer immediately nodded a quick header down to her right to extend the Miami advantage.
- Kailyn Morrison nearly added to the margin in the 42nd minute, as the Royals' goalkeeper barely got a touch on Morrison's attempt to knock it out of bounds for a save.
- The home side got on the scoreboard in the 75th minute, with Helena Merkle firing a shot from outside the box that ricocheted off the right goalpost and in.
- Merkle picked up her second goal of the night on a free kick from outside the box in the 83rd minute to pull the Royals within 3-2, but Miami held on to collect a road win.
