OXFORD, Ohio— Head coach Anthony Noreen announced the honorary addition of 15-year-old Liam Jergenson to the Miami Hockey family earlier today. Jergenson, a native of nearby Liberty Township, Ohio, was recognized at a special signing ceremony through a partnership with Team IMPACT.
"We've said since we got here that the lifeblood of our program is recruiting —the type of people that we bring in here and how much pride we're going to take in that— and exactly what we're going to look for in the type of people that are going to represent Miami Hockey," Noreen said.
"Guys that are highly competitive and have extremely high character and, above all those things, that are great teammates…
"Seeing Liam and the attitude he brings to the rink every day, the attitude he brings to our games, the smile on his face and the positive impact he has on all of us is an inspiration.
"We're excited to have him a part of this for as long as he wants; he's always got a spot in our locker room and around our team. We love having him here!"
Since 2011, Team IMPACT has matched children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, creating a long-term, life-changing experience for everyone involved.
Jergenson was diagnosed at the age of five with KIF1A, a progressive neurodegenerative disease which can hinder mobility and cause mental and developmental delays. He is one of approximately 500 people worldwide with this condition, and is the only person in the world with his specific variant.
At today's event, the RedHawks welcomed Jergenson as an official part of the Miami Athletics family and challenged him to continue to perform to the best of his ability in every area of his life. With his signature, Jergenson agreed to take on the responsibilities of participating in team events, cheering on his fellow teammates and having fun while carrying himself with pride, honor, respect, sportsmanship and integrity.
"Being around these guys is the best feeling ever," said Jergenson. "It inspires me to keep going."
Miami Hockey returns to action Friday, Feb. 14 at 9 p.m. ET at Colorado College.
