About Buffalo
Buffalo is 5-5 overall and 4-2 conference play entering Wednesday's contest. The Bulls are coming off a home loss to Central Michigan (38-19). Offensively, quarterback Ta'quan Roberson has thrown for 1,947 yards and 13 touchdowns (added two more on the ground), while linebacker Red Murdock is tops on the team with 114 tackles.
Familiar Face
Buffalo defensive coordinator Joe Bowen is very familiar with Miami. Bowen spent the 2022 and 2023 season on the RedHawks staff as its linebacker's coach. He was also a graduate assistant under Coach Martin for two years (2015-16). This is the second time Miami has faced a former staff member on the defensive side of the ball. John Hauser, Ohio's defensive coordinator, squared off with the RedHawks on Nov. 4.
Series History Versus The Bulls
Miami leads the all-time series 17-9 over Buffalo, including capturing the first 10 matchups between the teams. Miami has dropped three start road matchups in this contest and have not won at Buffalo since Nov. 12, 2016.
Last Meeting With The Bulls
Miami defeated Buffalo 23-10 back on Nov. 15, 2023. The win clinched the 2023 Mid-American Conference East championship and trip to the MAC title game. Rashad Amos had 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the RedHawks, while Aveon Smith threw for a season-high 146 yards for Miami.Â
Toledo Recap
Miami dropped a 24-3 decision last Wednesday to the Toledo Rockets. The RedHawks held Toledo to 312 yards, but three turnovers by the Red and White doomed Miami. Henry Hesson threw for 147 yards, while Silas Walters had a team-high nine tackles.
King Cole
Over his past three games, Cole Weaver has 18 catches for 231 yards. Weaver set career high for catches (9) and yards (96) in the win over Western Michigan and added six grabs for 94 yards against the Bobcats. Â Weaver, who now has 30 grabs for 386 yards this year, entered 2025 with just two career catches for 38 yards.
Lights, 'Kam'era, Action
Kam Perry currently averages 25.0 yards per reception, which ranks first in the country. After posting just 10 catches for 166 yards last season, the junior has already recorded three 100-yard games this season. He had 108 yards at Rutgers, 122 versus UNLV and 122 against Lindenwood. He also posted four grabs for 98 yards versus Western Michigan. He ranks third in the MAC with 726 receiving yards.
Magic Trick
Adam Trick currently ranks 15th nationally with 6.5 sacks and has already surpassed his career best (4.5), set last season. He posted 2.0 sacks at Wisconsin and recorded sacks in three-straight games versus Lindenwood (1.0), NIU (1.0) and Akron (1.5). Trick is one of 11 RedHawks to post a sack this season. Combined, Miami has recorded 26 sacks, which ranks 19th in the country.
Simply the Best
Miami came into this season with a lot of new faces on the defensive side of the ball. Seven players have recorded career bests in tackles (Corban Hondru, Jackson Kuwatch, Malcolm McCain, Adam Trick, Koy Beasley, Kaleb Martin and James Schott).
Yoyo Season
Miami opened the year with three-straight losses, before responding with a five-game win streak, including a perfect 4-0 record in the month of October. Miami has now dropped two-straight to Ohio and Toledo.
Henry, Oh Henry
Fifth-year senior Henry Hesson made his third career start last Wednesday versus Toledo and earlier this year he completed 13 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-0 win over Lindenwood. His first start as a RedHawk came back in 2023 in the middle of a monsoon versus App State in the Cure Bowl. In his career, he has thrown for 635 yards and four touchdowns.
What's to Play For?
At 4-2 in MAC play, the RedHawks can still play in Detroit, but currently sitting in a five-way tie for second place makes things tricky.
1. Western Michigan 5-1 (at NIU, at EMU)
2. Miami 4-2 (at Buffalo, vs. Ball State)
3. Central Michigan (at Kent State, Toledo)
4. Ohio 4-2 (UMass, at Buffalo)
5. Toledo 4-2 (Ball State, at CMU)
6. Buffalo 4-2 (Miami, Ohio)
7. Ball State 3-2 (EMU, at Toledo, at Miami)
New-Look Offensive LineÂ
Miami's OL lost one player to the transfer portal, while four others graduated following the 2024 season. In all, those five players started a combined 166 career games for the RedHawks. Miami's 2025 offensive line has a much different feel. Eric Smith, Kris Manu, Austin Uke and Greg Smith Jr. all made their first collegiate start in the season opener at Wisconsin, while Drew Terrill started his second career game. In all, Miami's offensive line has started a combined 51 games.
From Walk-on to Team Leader
Silas Walters came to Miami back in 2021 as a walk-on. Prior to the 2023 season, Walters earned a scholarship, and in 2024 he finished second on the team with 95 tackles and 12 pass breakups. He also represented Miami's defense at the 2025 MAC Football Media Day in Detroit.
Sean McVay Joins Cradle of Coaches
Miami added a 10th bronze statue to its Cradle of Coaches in Sean McVay back in 2023. McVay, the current head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, joined Ara Parseghian, Paul Brown, Weeb Ewbank, John Harbaugh, John Pont, Carm Cozza, Bo Schembechler, Red Blaik, and Paul Dietzel in the south end of Yager Stadium.
