Sabez Scores Five as Miami Shuts Down Ball State, 5-0

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami cruised past Ball State Sunday in a 5-0 shutout after freshman Malena Sabez scored five goals, breaking Miami's all-time scoring record for a freshmen. Miami improves to 11-4 (6-1 MAC) with the win, while Ball State falls to 4-13 (2-5 MAC) with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sabez scored the first goal of the game on a penalty corner with under a minute left to play in the first quarter. Becca Lawn inserted the ball and Berta Mata set Sabez up for the strike.
Miami generated five penalty corners and a penalty stroke in the second quarter, but were unable to score, rendering a 1-0 contest at halftime.
Sabez's second goal came on another penalty corner with assists from Lawn and Mata five minutes into the third period to make it 2-0.
The RedHawks extended their lead with five left to play in the third as Sabez scored on another penalty corner, this time with assists from Kylie Coughlin on the insert and Paula Navarro on the set up.
A third penalty-corner score by Sabez with assists from Lawn and Mata occurred early in the fourth quarter to make it a 4-0 game.
The RedHawk's final goal came on a fifth penalty corner score from Sabez. Coughlin was the inserter and Navarro set up Sabez to score. This capped off a 5-0 victory.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

The RedHawks had 10 assists on their five goals and generated 18 total penalty corners.
Miami generated 21 total shots, putting 14 on target.
The RedHawks held Ball State without any shots, shots on goal, or penalty corners.
Sabez went 5-for-12 with nine shots on goal. She now has 20 goals this season, leading the all-time ranks for Miami freshmen.
Justina Intzes had five total shots and four shots on goal.
Navarro had two assists.
Mata had three assists and two total shots, including a shot on goal.
Lawn had three assists.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will travel to Athens to face Ohio on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. before returning home on Friday, Oct. 31, for their final regular-season game of the year at 1 p.m.
