RedHawks Fall 2-1 to JMU in MAC Opener

OXFORD, Ohio – On Friday afternoon, the Miami University RedHawks and the James Madison University Dukes opened up Mid-American Conference play with a close competition. James Madison prevailed by a score of 2-1 to improve to 4-1 on the season (1-0 MAC). The RedHawks fall to 3-4 on the season (0-1 MAC).

UP NEXT: The RedHawks travel to Louisville, Ky. on Sunday, Sept. 22 to play the Bellarmine University Knights at 12 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game remained 0-0 after the end of a back-and-forth first quarter.
- At the end of the first half, the RedHawks were outshooting the Dukes 2-1, but the game remained scoreless 0-0. Each team had successfully defended a penalty corner.
- The third quarter still did not see a change in the 0-0 score. Each team did, however, receive a penalty card in the period. A green card was given to Miami's Claudia Negrete Garcia, and a yellow card to James Madison's Azul Covarrubias.
- Less than three minutes into the final quarter, the Dukes scored on a penalty corner to take a late 1-0 lead.
- Halfway through the quarter, James Madison scored again to double their lead to 2-0.
- On a penalty corner with just over four minutes remaining, Paula Peña Martinez cut the Dukes' lead in half 2-1 off assists from Berta Mata and Carlie Servis.
- The RedHawks then doubled down on offense, taking out goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken with four minutes left in regulation.
- Despite this, the Dukes held on for a 2-1 win.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks travel to Louisville, Ky. on Sunday, Sept. 22 to play the Bellarmine University Knights at 12 p.m.
